Department of Chemistry Organizes a Training Course on Risk Assessment and Management Inside Laboratories

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a training course on “Risk Assessment and Management Inside the Laboratory”, presented by Dr. Mudeen Adnan Yaseen and Assistant Lecturer Mustafa Abdulqader, with the attendance of a group of faculty members and students.

The course presenters aimed to enhance laboratory safety culture and raise awareness about procedures for minimizing risks, by training participants on the fundamental principles of assessing and managing risks within academic and research laboratory environments.

The lecturers focused on the concept of hazard and risk, clarifying the difference between them through explaining the global RAMP principle—Recognize, Assess, Minimize, and Prepare. They also highlighted the types of risks in laboratories, including chemical, physical, and biological risks, and explained how to determine the level of risk based on probability and severity according to a standard matrix.

The course concluded by emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility, and that adopting a risk assessment approach before starting any chemical experiment contributes to reducing accidents, thereby enhancing a safe working environment inside laboratories, in addition to promoting a culture of safety in academic and research institutions.
